Apple’s biggest tablet computer rival in the United States is, Amazon, and new estimate suggests that the retail giant has sold 5.5 million Kindle Fire tablets last quarter.

Take note Apple.

Amazon.com could be your biggest tablet computer rival this year, and last quarter, the retailer might have sold 5.5 million Kindle Fire tablets. Barclays analyst Anthony DiClemente reportedly thinks Amazon’s Android-based tablet computer has reached the 5 million sales mark last quarter alone, his exact guess is 5.5 million.

Last year was obviously “one of the best years” for tablet computers. In fact, Tablet PCs took a bigger bite out of the netbook and laptop computers last year according to multiple data provided by research firms. The growth was largely driven by the popularity of the Apple iPad, plus the growing number of Android buyers that are attracted to new software improvements.

Kindle Fire is attracting more customers due to its cheaper price tag of $199 only plus the own ecosystem of Amazon which offers quality Android apps, movies, music and other digital products.

In related news, more Android tablets are expected to arrive this year that will compete against the Kindle Fire and Apple’s rumored iPad 3. However, other Android manufacturers do not have the ability to offer “cheaper” tablets because they do not have the ecosystem to maintain and generate revenue, except Google of course.

According to rumors, the iPad 3 or the next Apple tablet computer might get a Q1 or Q2 release date, while Google might announce its first tablet PC by Q2. On the other hand, Amazon is reportedly set to release a new tablet PC this year but apparently, the company is not yet talking about it.
