Verizon is prepping for a new smartphone lineup that would compete with AT&T’s back-to-school offering which includes the new Nokia Lumia 1020. Unsurprisingly, Verizon is bringing its Droid branding back — the lineup which would offer the carrier’s bloats and other services.
On Friday, a new leak reveals the purported new Droid Ultra Max, and according to reports, it will replace last year’s Motorola Droid RAZR HD Maxx. The new Android-based handset features Kevlar back plate and red-and-black color combination and three capacitive touchscreen buttons. And unlike its last year’s Droid lineup, it looks like Verizon is putting its logo on the back alongside the 4G LTE branding, allowing handsets to be more “minimalist.”
Rumor has it that the new Droid Ultra Max, alongside two other new Droids, are arriving by end of this month, though rumors also added that the flagship Android smartphone of Taiwan-based HTC, the HTC One, is also joining the launch window for Verizon’s back to school smartphone refresh.
Similar to its rival carriers, Verizon’s HTC One will feature a 4.7-inch 1080p display, Android Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5 user interface, 4-ultrapixel primary camera, front-facing 2-megapixel camera, Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processors, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, IR Blaster of HTC TV, built-in FM radio and of course, the handset’s stylish zero-gap aluminum unibody which rivals the Apple’s iPhone 5, and beating Samsung Galaxy S4′s all-plastic and sticky build quality.
No word yet from Verizon about the pricing of the new phones, but keep in mind that the carrier is set to offer its new Edge early upgrades program that would allow customers to upgrade to latest and greatest handsets by exchanging handsets and paying more.
But apart from the new Edge upgrades program, Verizon is still offering its tradition 2-year contract agreement for top-end devices, and based on its previous launches, and comparing handsets offered by AT&T, it is possible that the Verizon HTC One would join the $199.99 price point, while the new Droid Ultra Maxx would take the expensive $249.99 to $299.99 pricing. The other rumored new Droids, the Droid Mini and the Droid Ultra are expected to take lower price points. Last year, the Droid Razr M took the $99.99 pricing while the RAZR HD was priced $199.99.
