Sony PlayStation 4 real specs revealed, actual console remains under wraps

The Sony PlayStation 4 has finally been revealed — well, perhaps a little prematurely? Did Sony Computer Entertainment just give Microsoft something to laugh at?
Previous reports pointing at Sony and Microsoft’s plans on migrating their gaming consoles to the world of x86 processors turns out to be true, the PS4 boasts an eight-core x86 processor alongside an ‘enhanced’ desktop-grade GPU — both of which are from Advanced Micro Devices or AMD.
We reckon that the system’s massive 8 gigabytes of DDR5 memory is what gave Sony the courage to call the PS4′s PC architecture “Supercharged”, the DDR5 modules can reach data transfer speeds of up to 176 gigabytes per second.
Interestingly enough, the event focused mainly on the PS4′s social networking prowess and Gaikai integration apart from previewing a ton of games to the point of boring most of the attendees, yes, the gaming graphics were pretty impressive and the demonstration of the PS4′s capabilities were breath-taking but a lot of the PS fanboys’ questions were left unanswered. What physical media will Sony’s next-gen console use? Will it support 4K resolutions? How much will it cost?
The worst part is, Sony did not even reveal the actual console so everyone was pretty much dumbfounded by that bit, leaving the event without any idea on how the much-hyped gaming system actually looks like. Maybe the final aesthetics of the device is yet to be finalized, maybe Sony has something up its sleeves.
Either way, many are guessing that the PS4 will see the light of day at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2013 [alongside the Xbox 720] which will be held at the Los Angeles Convention center to make sure that the hype it has built-up will continue.
As for release dates, Sony is looking to launch the PlayStation 4 this Christmas season — same time Microsoft’s Xbox 720 is bound to hit store shelves — no specific release dates were given and, like we’ve mentioned, the prices and versions of the console are still left to our imaginations.
