So it looks like the rumored Retina iPad Mini 2 is taking the back seat now as the the iWatch, the rumored “smartwatch” of Apple and the new iPad 5 take the lead in the Apple rumor mill.
A new report also signals the temporary closure of iPad Mini 2 rumors. As reported by Apple Insider, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told clients on Friday that the Apple iPad Mini with Retina display may happen but not after the first two quarters of 2013. Munster believes that Apple will still launch a new tablet computer by mid-2013, but it is the redesigned iPad 5 that will offer the same iPad Mini-like design style.
The full-sized iPad update in April is possible, Munster claims despite growing reports that Apple will not launch any new devices on first half of 2013 because it updated almost all devices last quarter only. Apple launched the iPhone 5, the iPad Mini and the iPad 4 last quarter only, so launching a new tablet computer again might start another backlash.
According to reports, Apple fans, or consumers, were disgruntled by the new iPad 4 (not to be confused with the new iPad Mini) announcement. But Apple’s problem now is the growing demand for non-iPads like the new tablet computer lineup with cheaper prices. Worth noting is Google’s Nexus 7, an ASUS made product. The 7-inch display is arguably the biggest rival of Apple based on quality, price and coverage. Another product worth mentioning is Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
Apple’s iPad Mini 2 will obviously offer Retina display to differentiate itself from its predecessor. However, Apple is struggling from supply constraints.
In addition to the iPad Mini 2 and the iPad 5, rumors also suggest that Apple will launch a smartwatch that would accompany Apple devices, an updated Apple TV and a new iPhone later this year.
