Facebook: From liking to wanting?
July 1, 2012, 2:39 A.M. ET — Facebook reportedly cooking a new response that’s far from like, well, I suppose. Reports say the popular site is planning to launch a “want button” that might benefit retailers and other retail-related companies.
Another post-Pinteresting? Facebook last week reportedly showed signs that it will bring a new button on its website, a “want” button that might work alongside the original like button and the third-party button called “Recommend.”
According to Tom Weddington, as reported by All Facebook, the social networking giant is working on the new button and the first evidence was uncovered last Wednesday. Weddington, a developer, revealed on his blog that clicking the want button has shown no response but renders. It is possible, based on the developer’s leak, that Facebook is building the Want button and planning on its implementation.
Facebook reportedly removed the button after the leakage appeared online, but Tom Weddington updated its blog post just to add that he’s now using an older copy of the code, adding that the button still works.
It makes sense, right? In fact, based on the success of Pinterest now in the shopping-centric social networking model, it is possible that Facebook wants the want button to act as a new stream for revenues like partnering with online and brick and mortar retailers, and those companies can lure more customers knowing that “Want” is far stronger than like when it comes to shopping.
