Unified new MacBook Pro (2012) and Air not happening this year?
May 7th 2012, 5:48 P.M.– Apple not merging the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro this year? A new report is suggesting that Apple, the popular “post PC” company, will introduce a new, and cheaper, MacBook Air this year, alongside a new MacBook Pro.
Waiting for the long-rumored “new MacBook Pro 2012″ with Air-like design? Well, here’s the latest rumor that will not give you a sweet smile today. According to reports, Apple will retail a new MacBook Air this year, yes still called the MacBook Air, and it will reportedly introduce the new and very competitive entry-level tag price–only $799.
Apparently, Windows laptop makers are reportedly on the verge of introducing cheaper ultrabooks this year, so it looks like the new rumor, more likely than not, is related to the upcoming ultrabooks and Windows 8 strategy of Microsoft, Intel and its OEM partners.
According to Digitimes, a popular Asian-based technology news website, Apple will introduce an ultra-portable MacBook this year sporting the tag price of $800 only, and the device will reportedly go on sale next quarter.
The site revealed:
Currently, Apple’s 11-inch 64GB MacBook Air is priced at US$999 with a 128GB version priced at US$1,199. The 13-inch 128GB version is priced at US$1,299 and 256GB version is US$1,599. If Apple decides to launch a US$799 MacBook Air, the sources believe the strategy will damage ultrabooks allowing Apple to continue to press its advantage.
If the new rumor is accurate, then Apple might still introduce a new MacBook Air and Pro, and not the long-rumored MacBook Pro that does not include an optical drive and features a slim, MacBook Air-like industrial design.
It is worth noting that Apple will retail a new operating system this year, the Mac OS X Mountain Lion which features iOS-like apps and services, like the new Game Center for Mac, AirPlay support, new Notification Center, messages which can communicate with iMessage of iOS, Reminders, Notes, share sheets and more. The new operating system, flaunting the 10.8 number, will compete not only with Microsoft’s Windows 8, but also with Google’s Chrome OS upgrade, the Aura update which features a new user interface.
