HTC profit drops, due to iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus?
Taiwan-based smartphone and tablet maker received its first profit drop last quarter.
Citing intense competition, and possibly the lack of the newest Android version, reports say the Taiwan-based Android and Windows Phone smartphone manufacturer has posted its first quarterly profit decline last quarter, Q4 of 2011.
Apparently, Apple introduced its new smartphone in Q4, the iPhone 4S, so it is highly possible that HTC is one of the “victims” of the new iPhone with the latest iOS 5 operating system.
Another smartphone worth mentioning is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first Android 4.0 smartphone. Google and Samsung introduced the new Android phone last quarter and multiple retailers have confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus was the most popular Android phone last month.
According to Bloomberg, the Q4 net income of HTC has dropped from $14.8 (Taiwan Dollars, last Q4 of 2010) to $11 billion last quarter, roughly 26 percent revenue decline. HTC acknowledge the fact that Apple and Samsung were the top smartphone sellers last quarter.
It is worth noting that before the holiday season last year, Samsung’s Galaxy S II was the “most popular,” in fact, Samsung said in a statement that the S2 is the company’s most popular smartphone to date. The Galaxy S2 is expected to receive its own Android 4.0 upgrade this year.
HTC’s Sensation and its variants like the XE and the XL also failed to attract customers (and attention of bloggers and journalists).
Speaking of Android 4.0, HTC is scheduled to introduce its own ICS phone/s this year and according to one rumor posted last month, HTC will release fewer phones overall in 2012 to focus on advertising and upgrades.
