AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 to get another Motorola Atrix rival

A new leak reveals Motorola’s upcoming new Android smartphone that could arrive this year.

While angry AT&T customers are waiting for the “purist” Samsung Galaxy S II or S2 of the orange-colored US wireless carrier, it looks like Motorola Mobility is preparing for their new flagship device that could land in stores this year, the Motorola Atrix 2.

According to the leak provided by BGR.com, the new Motorola Mobility device sports the “Edison” internal name, considered as the “follow-up” to the original Atrix 4G smartphone of AT&T. And like its name boasting the number “2,” the new Android phone will sport better features compared to the original Atrix 4G released last year. Some of the specs outed are either 1.2 or 1.5GHz TI OMAP4 processor, larger screen size (maybe 4.3 or 4.5-inch based on the leaked images), an 8-megapixel primary camera with 1080p HD video capture, a front-facing camera obviously, and the latest and greatest Android Gingerbread 2.3.5 operating system build out of the box.

Motorola Atrix 2The report also added that the new Moto device will not include LTE or Long Term Evolution, which is the new “technology” of AT&T that will compete against Verizon’s own LTE network. LTE is absolutely faster than the regular 3G, or HSPA+ connectivity.

Speaking of specs, the phone, unsurprisingly, sports OMAP4, the same processor being used by the new and improved Motorola Droid Bionic LTE phone of Verizon Wireless. Apparently, the Bionic phone was first announced in January with the Tegra 2 processor of Nvidia, but was later changed to Texas Instruments CPU. Is it possible that Motorola Mobility wants its new devices to get the Ice Cream Sandwich update ASAP after its release?

Apparently, TI OMAP is expected to get the first taste of the Android ICS, according to multiple reports including Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan, who outed in a blog post on Saturday that “OMAP is the preferred platform for next wave of devices. It will also see ICS before Tegra.”

Samsung, with its most popular Android device to date, the Samsung Galaxy S II or S2, is expected to hit the AT&T smartphone shelves soon. Many believe that the Samsung Galaxy S II is currently the “king” of Android smartphones, but it looks like Motorola Mobility isn’t into sitting pretty watching the South Korea-based company dominating the smartphone arena.

But can this new so-called Motorola Atrix 2 compete? Aside from Apple’s rumored new phone, the iPhone 5, this new Motorola Android device is also expected to get a set of upcoming Android rivals (aside from the S2, of course) this year like the new HTC Sensation XE, Samsung Galaxy Note, and the mythical new Nexus phone. Rumors suggests that the next Nexus phone will arrive in October-November.
