HTC Vigor: The Apple iPhone 5 of Thunderbolt? [Rumor]

HTC Android smartphoneHTC Vigor the OEM’s bet against the iPhone 5?

New document leaked online is suggesting that the HTC Vigor is the “replacement” of the Thunderbolt, packed with features that could attract more customers to join the “faster” LTE market.

Verizon Wireless nor HTC is yet to confirm the existence of the HTC Vigor, but a report posted last month had suggested that the phone will include some features that is still not available in the US smartphone market.

One specification of the phone mentioned is the 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, which is quite interesting knowing that Samsung is also rumored to release a phone with a processor higher than 1.2 GHz.

According to the leak posted by IGN and was heralded by PC World on Wednesday, the phone is expected to arrive in United States under the banner of Verizon Wireless, with a release date of September 29th. The phone was described by the document as the “new to report replacing the HTC Thunderbolt,” which is indirectly suggesting that the Vigor is like the second-generation of Verizon’s first Long Term Evolution Android smartphone, the HTC Thunderbolt that features 1 GHz single-core processor, 8 megapixel camera and FroYo out of the box.

It’s worth noting that HTC Thunderbolt had suffered a release date delay due to battery drain issues in Q1 (first quarter) of this year. According to an Engadget article posted February 25th, the test build of the Thunderbolt have recorded “miserable battery life” that caused the phone’s retail delay, and obviously triggered a movement in the release dates of other LTE handsets like Droid Charge and the LG Revolution.

Apparently, rumor mill is saying that the HTC Vigor will include Android Gingerbread out of the box (2.3.4 build according to Android Police), and with HTC Sense on top of the user interface of course — and it looks like HTC had learned its lessons when it comes to battery and firmware, and how to save battery juice by optimizing the operating system. But is the Vigor’s rumored launch date a little closer to the possible release of Android’s new build, the Ice Cream Sandwich?

And aside from the Ice Cream Sandwich launch, the HTC Vigor’s release date is also close to the iPhone 5 “launch season” (September to October) that is being reported by websites like All Things D and Wall Street Journal. If all the rumors about the HTC Vigor is legit, then it’s highly possible that the phone is HTC’s bet against the much-anticipated iOS 5-based iPhone 5 that was reportedly confirmed by Apple in Australia via a patent lodged in the company’s patent suit against Samsung Mobile related to the Galaxy phones lineup.
