Google Nexus S free today via Best Buy
Google’s second Android phone free today.
Best Buy launches one-day only Google Nexus S sale, three carriers are supported.
Three carriers to choose from, and one smartphone with “pure Google experience,” the Google Nexus S is available today for free according to Best Buy’s press release.
Google Nexus S is an Android smartphone manufactured by Samsung Mobile, but branded as a Google Phone. It was first launched last year and now supports three carriers, Sprint Wireless, T-Mobile and the newly launched model, the AT&T version. Google Nexus S is considered as the “real Android phone” because it offers the vanilla Android operating system that is always getting the fastest software update, and of course, no custom UI like MotoBlur or TouchWiz (yey). It also supports NFC, and should feature the Google Wallet (not available yet) that can transform your phone into a credit/debit card.
Under the hood, the Google Nexus S is powered by 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, 16 GB on board storage (no MicroSD card support, sorry), 5 megapixel rear camera, VGA front-facing camera that supports video calling courtesy of Google Talk and other third party application available in the Android Market, and the display is Super AMOLED with a resolution of 480×800. One of the interesting features of the Google Nexus S is its versatility when it comes to application support including the top applications like Netflix, Hulu, Skype and other popular apps.
According to Best Buy, the free tag price will last until Aug. 3, at 11:59 p.m. CT, and every order requires a 2 year contract agreement with the carrier of your choice. It’s also worth mentioning that Sprint’s version is the only Google Nexus S branded with the “4G” because it supports the WiMax connectivity that is theoretically faster than 3G, unless you have a bad Sprint signal.
The current version of Android that is supported by the Nexus S is the Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 that supports Google Talk with Video. The Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 also includes major bug fixes including random reboots and WiFi and 3G behavior. The latest Gingerbread version also supports better battery life.
