Nook Color (Android eReader) hacking galore: Ubuntu OS
Hacking Barnes and Noble’s Nook Color continues.
Nook Color getting a hack again, this time, to change Android as the operating system.
After Barnes and Noble released the iPad and Kindle device competitor “Nook Color,” a number of posts have emerged, teaching other users how to hack the colored eReader. Past hacks include Android marketplace hack, Angry Birds installation and so much more.
And the latest, a new hack was published by an XDA forum member, claiming that it’s now possible to use Ubuntu Linux as Nook Color’s operating system, aside from Android 2.1. The forum member said Ubuntu hack is possible when the Nook Color is already rooted, or hacked to get access to the files of the device.
The hack post includes video tutorial uploaded on Megavideo, as well as link to software needed to hack the Android-powered Nook. But the XDA member also posted a disclaimer, saying that he’s not “responsible if something goes wrong with your device, especially should it turn into a cave troll and bludgeon someone to death.”
Nook Color is using Android as its operating system, but doesn’t allow the access to Android’s application marketplace to block other apps that might compete with Barnes and Noble’s eBooks marketplace like Kindle for Android, and Kobo for Android.
