Windows Phone 7 is selling out, according to recent reports.

And here’s one  challenge that these new WP& powered phones will face – “reliability.”

Days before the launch of variety of Windows Phone 7 smartphones, a new study has concluded that iPhone 4, and some Android devices have recorded low percentage of malfunctions.

Third-party warranty provider SquareTrade has released their analyzed data, claiming that iPhone 4 is the most reliable smartphone, with 2.1% projected to have a non-accident malfunction in the first 12 months. While Android powered devices like HTC’s Nexus One, Evo, etc, and Motorola Droid, Droid X etc also recorded the least non-accident malfunctions in one year with 2.3% average for Motorola and 3.7% average for HTC.

But here’s the twist, iPhone 4 was also the smartphone model that recorded the highest percentage of damage due to accidents like dropping of the handsets, and liquid spilled.

SquareTrade said:

“The iPhone 4 is the most fragile device, and we expect 11.1% to experience drop-related damage over a year, nearly three times the rate of BlackBerry.”

Meanwhile, HTC devices landed second, while Motorola ended in third spot. iPhone 3G was the second smartphone with least recorded drop/spill incidents.

This study means, iPhone 4 is the best smartphone for “careful” consumers, because of its good reliability record and low percentage of non-accident malfunctions.

But if you’re a clumsy tech guy who loves to pamper your phone using your hand, or who always drops your smartphone, well, iPhone 4 might be your “worst nightmare.”

Windows Phone 7 Challenge

I believe reliability and durability of smartphones are important. With the claims of early sales success of Windows Phone 7 devices, I’m now looking forward to see some initial reactions of users.

Some of the notable Windows Phone 7 devices that I’m monitoring are HTC’s HD7 and Samsung’s Focus. Based on SquareTrade’s data, HTC’s phones are not far behind iPhone 4 when it comes to reliability, and the phones also recorded a low rate of accident cases like spill and drop damage.
