Samsung Galaxy S3 release date: Yet another specs rumor
South Korea’s Samsung to embrace quad-core this year? Samsung Galaxy S3 might ship with the “most powerful” Exynos chipset yet.
A new report posted by the Korea Times today revealed that a Samsung executive who requested anonymity outed the processor and connectivity of the company’s 2012 flagship Google Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S3 — and similar to rumors posted online, the exec was quoted as saying that it will support Long Term Evolution, and the phone will hide a quad-core CPU under the hood.
New Android phones arriving this year, like the HTC One X for example, are equipped with Nvidia’s Tegra 3 quad-core CPU, but Samsung has its own style of powering its devices, apparently, and it looks like the company’s own Exynos is still the star of the show.
A quad-core Exynos chip, more powerful than last year’s dual-core Exynos chip used by the Galaxy S2, will come with LTE compatibility that will allow faster downloads and uploads.
Samsung with its partner carriers are already offering LTE phones, so the new 4G technology is not an issue, while the quad-core CPU is also, more likely than not, “needed” especially if Samsung wants to compete against Apple and other Android phone makers.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 will reportedly go on sale beginning mid-2012, and its release date might collide with Apple’s iPhone 5.
Last year, Samsung’s Galaxy S2 was the “most popular” Android phone based on sales and market coverage. In fact, the S2 with Android Gingerbread, 8MP camera and a 480 x 800 resolution-equipped screen was the most popular phone of T-Mobile USA according to one research firm (due to the lack of T-Mobile iPhone 4S). The Galaxy S2 was also the “second most popular” phone of AT&T and Sprint, research has confirmed last year.
